The Unyielding Choice Between Having a Part-Time or Full-Time Job as an Actor

So you have a passion for acting but unlucky for you, you aren't always guaranteed a job. And a job is only temporary. Are you prepared to work in a part-time job in customer service and begin your passion right now, or will you have a full-time job in something you enjoy and put acting on the back-burner for a while?

The decision is tough. It might not be if you enjoy customer service – you might take pride in taking people's food orders and serving them drinks. It's rare, though. I certainly didn't enjoy it, so I'm trying my best to balance acting with something I enjoy, writing.

Now I don't have the patience or the money to write a novel (I do actually have one on the go, it's sitting on the back-burner, for obvious reasons), so that's not really an ideal option if you're actually wanting to survive as an actor. I've literally just moved to London, so I really can't just do that.

But I hate customer service! After having spent years gaining experience in the field, no matter how nice people can be, I just really hate the job. It's not stimulating enough and I've had it with the monotony.

Within the last 6 months, I discovered the realm copywriting and the variety of tasks and information that comes with it. It's the complete opposite of customer service and perfect for my impatient brain. Yes, you'd be appealing to customers, but that's more to do with your presentation. I can act, I know how to engage my audience: be human and show the emotions that they can relate to.

So am I going to get a full-time job in copywriting? I actually hope to get some part-time work in copywriting, whether that is freelance or not. I'm going to see where life takes me. This is why I have created my copywriting portfolio, to show prospective employers my potential, and hopefully start up a career.

If all else fails, yes, I will probably go back to customer services temporarily. I'd really rather not, though. I can't deal with something so mind-numbing, so I'm working very hard, into the late hours of the night, to get my dream career.

Stay on the lookout to see if I can make it!
